Jhabua is a tribal dominant district of Madhya Pradesh. The main source of livelihood is agriculture and more than 73 percent agriculture is rain dependent. Irregular rainfall and scarcity of water forces farmers to constantly migrate to other cities for daily wage labor work. In this context, IGSSS started the MACWA (Management and Conservation of Water resources in Agriculture) programme. The attempt is to enhance resilience of 1000 households in 15 villages of Jhabua district, Madhya Pradesh. It is through the adaptation of appropriate conservation and management measures, related to water and agriculture.
Community based organizations such as farmer club, water user group, self help group have been formed and strengthened. These CBOs are playing an effective leadership role to conserve and manage their village resources. Ensuring equitable distribution of available water resources and enhancing agricultural production by improving the agriculture practices. The SHGs formed by women have started income generation activities as a step forward towards social and economic progress.
Key Achievements:
- 960 community members are actively associated with 88 community based organizations and managing their village resources
- 20 water bodies have been renovated and it is helping to irrigate 234 acres agricultural lands of more than 300 farmers
- 361 farmers have increased their production
- 505 families are cultivating and consuming vegetables to meet their daily nutrition requirement from their own kitchen garden
- 162 farmers are creating systems for ground water recharging at their farm
- 811 beneficiaries have received benefits of various government schemes. It is equal to 20.58 lakh INR.
