It is a moment of pride for us as our Partner Torpa Rural Development Society for Women was awarded the Gold Medal in the prestigious Skoch Award competition held at the national level for the low-cost Bori-Bandh model installed at Kherkai village in Khunti District, Jharkhand. Khunti is the only district in Jharkhand which has won the award.
Since 2016, IGSSS is implementing Creating Livelihood Adaption under Drought (CLAD) project in Khunti, Jharkhand in partnership with Torpa Rural Development Society for Women (TRDSW) with the core objective of enhancing the resilience capacity of the community against slow-onset drought.
We are promoting the low-cost check dam model famously known as Bori-Bandh to retain rainwater for the purpose of irrigation or agricultural practices. This water harvesting structure became a game-changer among small and marginal farmers as more and more people in the community start replicating the model. Upon learning the benefit of Bori-Bandh, the district administration in collaboration with our partner and other local NGO began promoting the model across the district. By 2019, more than 200 Bori-Bandh was constructed in Khundi district alone.
